KAROLINA SCHOOL, SZEGED
The Szeged Karolina School was founded by the School Sisters of Notre Dame (SSND) in 1873. The school is named after Mother Maria Karolina Friess.

It is a public school still governed by the School Sisters, this way it is a very unique institution in the Hungarian educational system. The School Sisters of Notre Dame is an international order, with schools all over the world.
 INSTITUTION
Our school is a complex institution: a nursery school (ages 3-6), primary (7-14) and secondary (11-18). It also includes a music school and a small boarding home, including a boarding home for university students too. The overall number of students on all levels is around 1000, and approximately 100 teachers take care of them.
Academically, the school offers general education, with an emphasis on foreign languages, of which English, German, French and Italian can be learnt. The secondary school students have an opportunity to specialise in one or two subjects and get extra classes in the last two years, depending on their planned future studies. Our students take the national baccalaureate in year 12.
EDUCATIONAL PRINCIPLES
’We educate with everything we are’
(Blessed M. Theresa of Jesus Gerhardinger
Founder of SSND)
In Szeged Karolina School we place special emphasis on community spirit and moral values deriving from Christianity, Roman Catholisism. We also nurture personal development, social skills and ecological thinking. We put great emphasis on inclusive teaching and learning, thus giving opportunities to those who are motivated but may have less opportunities. We embrace Pope St. Francis Laudato Si’ Encyclical and try to educate our students according to its principles. Karolina School first obtained the Eco-school title in 2005 and it has been renewed several times since. Our teachers are highly motivated in renewing their methodology; are lifelong learners. We aim to create a relationship with our students that is based on trust, openness and a curiosity towards knowledge and most of all solidarity and understanding. We are open to other cultures and experience outside the classroom too.
